How to read a car dealer quote without losing the plot

A monthly payment is an output, not a price. Read the quote by separating the car purchase, financing, trade-in, cash down, taxes and government charges, dealer fees, and optional products.

The short answer

Start with the negotiated selling price and written out-the-door total. Identify every fee and add-on. Then examine trade value separately and compare financing by amount financed, APR, term, monthly payment, finance charge, and total of payments.

Vehicle purchase

  • Advertised price, MSRP when relevant, negotiated selling price, discount, and market adjustment.
  • Dealer fees, accessories, protection products, service contracts, and other add-ons—each with a name and price.
  • Taxes, title, registration, and other government charges.
  • Final out-the-door price before trade, down payment, and financing obscure it.

Financing

  • Amount financed, APR, term, monthly payment, finance charge, and total of payments.
  • Whether the quoted vehicle price depends on using dealer financing or a specific incentive.
  • Whether a lower payment came from a lower price or merely a longer term or larger down payment.

Trade and cash down

Keep the trade allowance and trade payoff separate from the new car's price. Cash down reduces what you finance; it is not a discount. A strong-looking trade number can conceal a weaker vehicle price elsewhere in the worksheet.

Before signing

Compare the final contract with the offer you accepted. Ask about every changed amount, removed discount, added product, different APR or term, or altered trade figure before signing.

Common questions

What number should I ask the dealer for?+

Ask for an itemized out-the-door price in writing. It should show the vehicle and all charges and fees, allowing you to compare offers on the same basis.

Why is monthly payment a poor comparison by itself?+

The same payment can be produced by changing the down payment, loan length, amount financed, or rate. Compare those inputs and the total cost, not only the payment.
