The total cost of owning a car: two views you should keep separate
The payment is not the cost of the car, and sticker price is not the cost of owning it. A useful view separates monthly cash flow from long-term economic cost.
The short answer
For cash flow, include down payment, loan payments, insurance, fuel or electricity, registration, maintenance, repairs, tires, and recurring parking or tolls. For economic cost, include depreciation, interest, insurance, energy, maintenance, repairs, registration, taxes, and transaction costs.
Cash-flow view
This answers: can the household comfortably handle the money leaving the account? Include upfront cash and recurring payments, then model a normal month and an expensive year.
- Down payment and monthly loan or lease payments.
- Insurance, fuel or electricity, registration, parking, and tolls.
- Routine maintenance, tires, and a repair reserve.
Economic-cost view
This answers: what is ownership consuming over time? Include depreciation and financing interest along with operating and transaction costs.
Avoid the double-counting trap
Do not add full loan principal and depreciation in the same economic-cost total. Principal mostly converts cash into ownership of the vehicle; depreciation represents the value that ownership loses over time.
Show ranges, not pretend precision
Insurance, resale value, repair risk, fuel prices, and annual mileage can change. Record the assumptions, show a range, and replace estimates with actual quotes or observations as the decision becomes serious.

What matters besides the monthly car payment?+
APR, loan term, amount financed, total interest, insurance, fuel or electricity, maintenance, repairs, tires, registration, parking, and depreciation can all change the real affordability of a vehicle.
Is the cheapest car always cheapest to own?+
No. Purchase price is one input. Financing, insurance, energy, maintenance, repairs, depreciation, and expected ownership duration can change the result.
